How does makeup differ from Asia to the USA?
Yumi Kaizuka: This is a great question! In Asia—particularly in countries like Japan, Korea, and China—there’s a strong preference for pale, flawless skin reminiscent of Snow White. SPF is a must, and brightening skincare products are widely used to achieve that radiant, luminous complexion. The makeup style is typically softer and often leans toward a “cute” and youthful look, almost like a baby’s skin. In the USA, the approach feels more bold and confident. Many people favor a no-makeup makeup look that enhances their natural features but still reflects their individuality. Makeup here often carries a sense of empowerment. Personally, I see it as a tool for boosting confidence—it energizes me, especially when I need to face important events or moments where I want to make an impression.
