Daniela Useche is a medical technologist who specializes in Andrology. Originally from Venezuela, she currently works at the University of Florida Shands Hospital where every day she plays a critical role in sample testing and analysis. Useche grew up and went to school in her home country of Venezuela attending University de los Andes and takes those lessons with her everyday. As a medical technologist she plays an integral role in the day to day running of a hospital and is crucial in both the diagnosis and treatment phase. Today she sat down with us to discuss healthcare worldwide, and her time so far working in the United States.

Growing up in Venezuela, what do you notice about the difference in the healthcare system?

Daniela Useche:  First off, thank you for having me! The healthcare system in Venezuela has undergone significant changes in recent years. What was once a robust public healthcare system has been hurt by political and economic instability. There was a strong emphasis on both preventative care and public health programs which unfortunately has been impacted by the crisis. Shortage of essential medicines as well as any medical supplies have risen in recent years taking away from what was a strong system.

Has this crisis affected your career?

Yes! Unfortunately many healthcare professionals such as myself have had to emigrate due to low wages and poor working conditions. This had led to a bad domino effect unfortunately. The healthcare infrastructure has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance and investment. Due to this, the quality of care has gone down massively. Many patients face an uphill battle in an attempt to receive even adequate treatment. Combine that with the exodus of healthcare professionals which has led to understaffed facilities and you have the Venezuela healthcare system summed up. It is an unfortunate state of affairs, but hopefully one that will have a positive resolution.

What do you miss about home?

A lot! Venezuelan culture is known as being particularly warm, friendly and openly hospitable. What I really miss is the genuine connections and social interactions with both friends and family. On top of that, the food is amazing! Venezuelan cuisine is diverse and full of flavor, with dishes such as arepas, tequenos, and pabellon criollo which you just can’t find in the US. I also miss the natural beauty of my home country. There is such a diverse mix of beaches, mountains and rainforests allowing you to explore a little of everything. Despite the situation the country is currently facing, our cultural identity remains strong and our spirits vibrant.

Where should you visit if going to Venezuela?

This is a tough question because there are so many answers but I will try to narrow it down. Venezuela has a great mixture of stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It is definitely a country that should be visited to be experienced. Here are some suggestions for can’t miss spots!

Angel Falls: The world’s highest uninterrupted waterfalls. With a cascade of over 979 meters and residing in Canaima National Park, the waterfall is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The National Park itself contains vast savannahs, mesa, and pristine rainforest so seeing Angel Falls allows you to also experience a little of the natural diversity of the country.

Los Roques Archipelago: A tropical paradise! With beautiful white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters this National Park is another can’t miss for those who love the beach.

Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my home town of Merida. It is in a mountainous region filled with stunning peaks, lush valleys and it has a charming colonial vibe to it.

How can the healthcare provided in Venezuela be improved?

Venezuela, as I mentioned, faces significant challenges currently. Thanks to the turmoil in the country there is much room for improvement. Through controlling economic stability, hyperinflation can be addressed helping to stabilize the currency. This is crucial in order to ensure consistent healthcare funding. On top of that, the hospitals could use an update. There is a need for renovation and new construction, but also the supply chain needs to be fixed. Currently unreliable, the supply chain hinders hospitals from having the necessary equipment and supplies.

How about the US?

It is important to note that the US healthcare system is one of the most advanced in the world. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t face its own set of challenges. Primarily, the cost of healthcare is astronomical, and that needs to be addressed. There is a clogging of the system which could be improved through reducing the administrative burden. We can also strive to improve primary care and encourage preventative care. Hopefully both countries can address their individual issues and provide the highest level of care for everyone.

Talk about your work experience at Laboratorio Clinico Carmona Useche

My time working at Laboratorio Clinico Carmona Useche was both challenging and rewarding. During that time I learned a lot and gained invaluable experience. The challenges that I faced working in Venezuela prepared me and helped to make me a better and stronger professional.

Would you like to travel more and where would you include on your travel list?

One of the benefits of the United States is the diversity in cities. I would love to travel around and visit some cities within the States such as:

Portland, Oregon. It seems like such a fun quirky city with a focus on sustainability, craft beer, and outdoor activities.

Charleston, South Carolina: A charming Southern city rich in history. I would love to explore the beautiful historic homes with my family one day.

Santa Fe, New Mexico: A unique city with an even more unique blend of cultures. A blend of American, Spanish, and Mexican influence makes the city even more appealing to visit.

What have you enjoyed about American Culture?

America is a melting pot, at least that is how the saying goes. But I have gotten to experience that and it is very impressive. The diversity gives way to great innovation and the blend of cultures, traditions, and perspectives is fascinating. This of course is partly due to the emphasis given to individual freedoms allowing people to develop their own ideas. What sticks out most is the ability to pursue your dreams and ability to be creative in your own way. It is because of this that American culture has produced groundbreaking art, music, literature, and technology which has helped to shape the world.
